Priest stabbed during mass at Canada’s biggest church

A priest was stabbed during a livestreamed morning mass Friday at Canada’s biggest church, Saint Joseph’s Oratory in Montreal, police said.
The suspect was arrested at the Roman Catholic basilica shortly after the attack in front of 50 people and a television audience around 8:40 am (1240 GMT), while priest Claude Grou was taken to hospital.

Police told AFP that Grou was “slightly wounded in the upper body” when, according to witnesses cited by authorities, “the suspect suddenly ran up to the priest and attacked him with a knife” while he was officiating the mass.

The suspect was due to be interrogated shortly, while the scene has been cordoned off.

Church spokeswoman Celine Barbeau said Grou, the church’s rector, “was conscious when he left. We are hopeful he will pull through.”

Video of the attack rebroadcast by CTV showed the assailant — a tall man in jeans, a parka and a white baseball cap — chase the priest around the altar and stab him.

Grou falls to the ground, but quickly gets back up and backs away as security officers surround the suspect and detain him until police arrive.

A witness, Adele Plamondon, told public broadcaster Radio-Canada the priest was about to start reading the gospel, when “this man drew a knife and ran up to stab him.”

The suspect “did not shout, didn’t say anything” during the assault, but appeared “very determined,” Plamondon said.

Highly enlightened, exposed and experienced especially in petroleum related areas, Professor Eyo Etim Nyong remains an intellectual asset to his state, country and the world at large.

A consultant and registered petroleum geologist under the council of Nigerian Mining Engineers and Geo science (COMEG), Prof. Nyong has a myriad of awards, fellowship and professional certifications ascribed to his name. A repository of knowledge, Prof. Eyo Etim Nyong has so much to offer. He is an embodiment of geological sciences with a parade of certificates; M.S.C, M Phil and PhD to show for his academic excellence and brilliance.         A ruling Elder in the Presbyterian church and an unsung philanthropist, giving is like a religion to him. Many students across ethnic divides have benefitted so much from the scholarship schemes of this noble statesman. Also, Widows, youths and businessmen have also enjoyed his support. His tenure as a board member of the Niger Delta Development Commission was a 'golden' era especially, for the people of Cross River State. G.A: How well did your position at the governing board of the NDDC impact on your people?

PROF. NYONG
: Despite the low funding of NDDC and near zero allocation of Cross River State at the initial state of the commission, I was able to secure and complete about 57 projects spread across the entire Cross River State. They include;

G.A: In spite of your fine resume and the pressure you often get from your people to vie for elective positions,  do you regret the several attempts you made at occupying elective positions but never assumed any?

PROF. NYONG: I am not a career politician. I am a professional. Even if I leave this country, I will get a job somewhere. Politics is bad when you do not have a fallback position. I do not regret the several attempts I made at serving my people. For me, I have always come from the angle of service. The desire to put Cross River State on a trajectory of growth and development has always been the driving factor.

G.A: Can you let us into your family?

PROF NYONG: I am married with four children, two boys and two girls. Unfortunately, my wife died in 2011. Since then, I have been without a wife.

G.A: What will you want to be remembered for?

PROF NYONG
: I should not be the one to suggest what people will remember me for – people can choose to remember for whatever I did that touched their hearts.

G.A: Thank you for granting us this interview.

PROF. NYONG: Good bye.

Federal Government closes country's borders...

The Federal government of Nigeria has closed all the entry and exit
borders of the country.
Minister of Interior, Lieutenant General (rtd) Abdulrahman Dambazau, ordered the closure of borders for Saturday’s governorship and House of Assembly polls.

The closure order takes effect from noon today, till Sunday, March 10, at noon.

Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Muhammad Babandede announced the decision in a statement issued in Abuja.

The public is therefore advised to take note and ensure compliance to this order.

In Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation, the Governorship and House of Assembly elections have been slated to hold in few hours time with the Independent National Electoral Commisssion expected to be an unbiased umpire in the contest.

Some residents mostly from the south- south states speak about their expectations over the elections.

* My state is Akwa Ibom state. Unfortunately, Akwa Ibom state was named as one of the flash points by the security agencies owing to activities of hoodlums. Hence, my expectation is that we have a free and fair elections and that all the actors should please allow the officers of INEC do their work and not be intimidated.

Soldiers should only protect electorate and should not scare them. Eligible voters should go out and vote candidates of their choice. God bless our state.
 - Mr.Emmanuel Odiong, Akwa Ibom state.

*I look forward to an Election where election materials will arrive early, electorate will not be threatened to vote a particular party, card reader will be used and able to work fine without complain and election results will be collated and well announced at the collation centre without the use of thugs or armed men to distract or disorganise tomorrow's election. Also, I look forward to seeing a free, fair poll tomorrow without rigging.
- Ngozi Nwachukwu a.k.a Miss Amebo, Abia state.

* I just want our leaders to conduct a free and fair election without anyone losing his or her life.
- Melvet Nku, Cross River state.

* I expect an improvement from what was obtained during the Presidential and National Assembly elections. I hope INEC is better prepared and has learnt lessons from the previous exercise in readiness to conduct a credible and acceptable election tomorrow. I pray for a peaceful atmosphere all through...
- Tony Esin, Akwa Ibom state.

* The elections will be free and fair. I trust peace loving people of Cross River state and urge them to maintain the peace they are always known for. I also my candidate will win again.
- Juliet Asaba, Cross River state.

* In the Federal Capital Territory, governorship elections will not be held here. Rather, Area council and councillorship elections shall hold in the different area councils.

My area council is AMAC and my expectation is simple. It shall be peaceful. The candidates have shown maturity but, as usual, rigging will be present.
- Chike Anierobi, F.C.T, Abuja.

* Well my candidate all the way, for the governorship election because there is this famous saying that the devil you know is better than the angel you don't know
- Moses Ede, Cross River state.

* I expect a very interesting contest mingled with pockets of violence but in the end it would be the ruling party all the way in Akwa Ibom State. We are ready to support a man who knows how to sustain peace, seek and pursue it.
- Bassey James, Akwa Ibom state.

* I believe very well that the elections will go on well. As for my home state I see the ruling party having a landslide victory.
- Terem Agida, Cross River state.

* It will take a miracle for the opposition to make any meaningful impact in tomorrow's elections. To come from winning just one NASS seat in Cross River state is definitely not enough to make a statement in the contest. Victory for the ruling party in the election is a sure bet. Though winning governorship election in  Cross River State is a major prayer point of the opposition but the prayer might not be answered before the elections are concluded tomorrow.
- Tony Darlington Ugbe, Cross River state.

* Almost everyone has a candidate(s) to support tomorrow and they expect  their candidate(s) to win. I have mine and foresee victory for them.
- Blessing Umoetuk, Akwa Ibom state.

* I foresee victory for the ruling party in Cross River with 5 LGAs' as a determinant. 2 in the South, 2 in the Central and 1 in the North but the 2 in the central will be a battle ground.

Other States are, Kaduna, Adamawa, Zamfara, Yobe, Gombe, possibly, Nasarawa may be won by the PDP. I also tip Lagos state for the PDP. The remaining north central States go to the PDP apart from Niger State for the APC. South East all PDP S/S PDP...... South west 2 States  apart from Lagos state.

 - Agi Omaga, Cross River state.

* I see the ruling party winning in Cross River State.
- Kingsley Opute, Cross River state.

* There will be no governorship election tomorrow in Edo state but House of Assembly elections and everyone will come out to make their choice. Hopefully, it's going to be more peaceful than ever without rigging.  Amen.
- Tracy Omondiagbe, Edo state.

* In Lagos state, the unthinkable may happen in the election because Lagosians are set to break the yoke of political godfatherism in the State.
- Jeremiah U, Lagos state.

* Akwa Ibom people are wiser. We know what is good for us. We will vote for the candidate and the party of our choice.
- Ekemini Etim, Akwa Ibom state.

* I wish them the best.
- Shantel Joe, Lagos state.

TODAY IS: INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY

Today's international women's day.
A day set aside by the international community to recognise and celebrate the role of women in our society. No doubt, women have played significant roles to the successes of men in different areas of endeavours.

Moreover, there are women who have been at the forefront of several developmental & progressive schemes in our society.

At the home, church, school, office or any fragment of the society, one cannot but notice the invaluable contributions of women.

There are those whose works and contributions to the society attracted attention at the global, national, states & local levels.

The world can never forget Margaret Thatcher, who was the
longest serving British Prime Minister and one of the most
influential personalities of the 20th century.

History will forever be kind to Mother Teresa of Calcutta, now
Saint. Teresa, who devoted her life to the service of the poor and destitutes around the world. In perpetual memory of her, monuments have been erected, organizations, buildings, streets
and schools have been named after her.

A grateful nation would never forget Dora Akunyuli, who gained
international recognition for sanitizing the drugs arm of Nigeria's health sector while she was the Director General of NAFDAC.

Any book on Nigeria's anti- colonial struggles would be incomplete without a generous space devoted to Margaret Ekpo who led the famous "Aba Women Riot" of 1929. Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti was also one of Nigeria's female leading activist.

Who talks about women participation in politics without a deserved mention of Cecilia Ekpenyong who was the first female deputy governor in Nigeria? She served under former Governor Clement Ebri of Cross River State.

Chinyere Kalu, first woman in Nigeria to fly an aircraft has a place in history.

Grace Alele-Williams, first female Vice Chancellor in Nigeria lives on to enjoy the honour and grace.

Chimamanda Adichie, Buchi Emecheta and others have made significant contributions to the literary world through their rich literary works.

Genevieve Nnaji, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, Stephanie Okereke, Stella Damascus and others; beyond being screen goddesses  have made their marks in the Nollywood industry.

Recently, I had the honour of doing a study on Eugenia Abu who made news, lived news, ate news, dreamt news and read news on NTA for decades before her eventful retirement. Her life story is not only inspirational but worthy of emulation by younger women.

Who says you cannot make news as a woman? There are young women who are breaking grounds, defining and redefining concepts and making positive contributions to the society we live in.

Farewell to those times when women cried & begged for recognition. Women are everywhere now.

In many homes now, women are the breadwinners. In some homes, they contribute almost same or a little less than their husbands to the family's purse.

Women are worth celebrating on this day and beyond.

Happy women's day!

Buhari's victory: Even our cows are happy- Miyetti Allah

National President of Miyetti Allah, Kautal Hore Socio-cultural Association, Bello Abdullahi Bodejo has said that even Fulani cows are happy over the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari in last Saturday’s election. Report says.

Reacting to the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari at the just concluded presidential election, Bodejo said: "The game is finished and we are already in the Next Level. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has done a good job. As for me, since the last two weeks, I knew that President Buhari would win the election. He campaigned all over the country and the masses like him. Even if he did not go round and stayed in Abuja, he would still have won the election because of the love of people for him.

It was obvious that the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar was going to lose the election. Since last two weeks, we had prepared cows that we want to use to celebrate the victory of Baba Buhari. What we are waiting for now is the governorship and House of Assembly elections. Some governors are good and they are supposed to come back but the people should vote out some governors who did not work. All those governors who are trying to create anti-grazing laws should lose their elections. Some of them are enemies of the country and the Fulani. We are praying that such people should lose the election.

A governor like Samuel Ortom must lose this election like the way Atiku lost."
