Prepare for fresh recession: Governors Tell Nigerians
The Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) has told Nigerians to prepare for another cycle of economic recession by mid-2020. The forum also advised new and returning governors not to rely on external borrowing as a means of solving the economic challenges that they might face in their states. Outgoing Chairman of NGF, Governor Abdulaziz Yari, who gave the warning yesterday at an induction for the governors, said the recession may likely last up to the third quarter of 2021. Yari, who is also the outgoing governor of Zamfara State, said this was a wake-up call for the new state chief executives to prepare to face the challenges, especially now that President Muhammadu Buhari has signed the national minimum wage law, which pegged the minimum workers’ salaries at N30,000.
“This scenario is a wake-up call for all of you to come amply prepared to face these kinds of challenges, especially since we are expecting the possibility of another cycle of recession by the mid-2020. “This may last up to the third quarter of 2021. Your good spirit of stewardship will make you contain the situation should there be one. “Also as members of the National Economic Council, you must work hand in hand to boost the economy in tandem with the global best practices,’’ the governor said. According to him, the new and returning governors should look inward on how to boost their revenue generation base, especially their internally generated revenue (IGR) to enable them execute people-oriented projects and reduce overdependence on the Federation Account.
“Ours has been a challenging experience of managing state economies that are totally dependent on accruals from the federation account rather than exploring viable alternatives to run the economy. “For most of the states, internally generated revenues are nothing to write home about,” the governor noted. He told the governors that it may not be smooth ride for them, noting that the achievements recorded by their predecessors between 2011 and 2014, was because of a relatively high oil price of between $100 and $114 per barrel.

“However, by the mid- 2014, the price of crude oil, which is sadly the main driving force of government’s expenditure, dropped to $75 per barrel. It, therefore, became very difficult for many states to even pay salaries of their workers,” he added. Yari noted that there was no better time to pay more serious attention to the issue of economic diversification than now when the world is moving away from carbon fuel to biofuel and electronic vehicles. “It is expected that by year 2030, most vehicles in advanced countries would be powered by electricity, which is green friendly, with low carbon emission.
When this happens, it will spell doom for our economy if we have not diversified,” he further warned. According to him, diversification of the economy would entail shifting away from reliance on export commodity and focusing on sustainable growth and genuine development to achieve industrialization.
He, therefore, challenged the new and returning governors to seek a way of boosting their economic base and to utilise them effectively for execution of projects that would touch the lives of the people. “You must not forget the high expectations of our people on us; now that the democracy is maturing day in day out, the challenges of governance and service delivery are more demanding. “It is also a source of worry to all reasonable observers that in all modern economies, it is the public that drive the government by supporting it through payment of their taxes as and when due. “In our situation, the reverse is the case. It is very unfortunate that our people have a very negative attitude to payment of taxes in full, including corporate agencies,” he stated.
He called for strengthening of the nation’s tax laws to make them very effective, and expressed the confidence that if necessary measures were put in place, Nigeria would succeed in tackling unemployment, reduce poverty and ensure food security with a robust economy. In an interview with newsmen, Bala Mohammed, Governor-elect for Bauchi State, said that the inductees should see themselves as those called to duty and work toward delivering the dividends of democracy to the people. “I listened to the development partners and what the vice president said, government is a collective responsibility. Government is a trust and we should rediscover ourselves. “We should know that we are privileged out of 200 million, 74 of us have been elected as governors, as deputy governors, as president, as vice president, we must be able to deliver, to leave legacies and landmarks,” he said. On his part, the Governor- elect of Imo State, Emeka Ihedioha, said he would look at ways of improving the IGR of the state. He said he was looking forward to running an inclusive government that would factor in all shades of opinion.

2019 General Elections: APGA realised 1.3 billion from sales of forms
Chairman of All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA , Chief. Victor Ike Oye says his party realised the sum of 1.3 billion naira from sales of forms nationwide.
He made this known during an interview with newsmen in his residence at Amawbia in Akwa local government area of Anambra state in southeast part of Nigeria.
Since he made the disclosure, Nigerians have been wondering how much bigger political parties like the ruling All Progressive Congress and opposition Peoples Democratic Party must have made from sales of forms prior to the last general elections.
"Could such monies not be ploughed into the Nation's economy to provide jobs for millions of unemployed graduates roaming the streets in search of jobs that do not exist?" Ibeh Hope, queried.
NEWS2023: Tinubu, Igbo will never be Nigeria President – Miyetti Allah declares
National President, Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, Abdullahi Bodejo, has declared that a former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu will never succeed President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.
Bodejo also stated why it would be difficult for Igbo to become President in Nigeria.
He said he does not believe in the rotation of power between the North and South because of the way northerners were being treated in some parts of the country.
“Do you know that if you go to some parts of the South, if they see an Hausa man, they would say he is a Boko Haram member or derogatorily, they will say ‘Onye Hausa?,” he asked in an interview with Sun.
“That kind of hatred has been there among some Southerners. It will be difficult for the Igbo to rule this country because they have something in their mind that is not good.
“The country is more than a tribe coming to hate some ethnic region, religion and so on. They should know that Nigeria is one.”
Asked if he knows that without Tinubu, Buhari would not have made it in 2015, he added, “I have told you that 2015 is now history. Even me talking to you now, do you know the role I played in 2015?
“People played all manner of politics in 2015 and Tinubu was not the only person.
“What I know is that Tinubu cannot be the president of Nigeria. That is the truth. He is very old and maybe older than President Buhari.

“Some people see Tinubu like one big masquerade but he is not. Some think that he is the Yoruba leader but he is not.
“He is also like Obasanjo; some people see the former president as a small god but he is not. In my last interview before the election, I said it that Obasanjo has only one vote like any other person.
“What happened? Did it not turn out like that? Everybody’s eyes are already open now.
“If Tinubu is recognized by the Yoruba people as their leader, why did Buhari score 50 per cent there?
“Why did he not ask them to give him like even 60 per cent at least? Tinubu has failed and that is the truth.
“Or are you telling me that Tinubu did anti-party activities by telling the South West to share the votes 50/50 to APC and PDP?”

President Trump set for June visit to UK
US President Donald Trump will make a state visit to the UK in early June, Buckingham Palace is expected to announce later.
The president was promised the visit by Prime Minister Theresa May after he was elected in 2016 but no date was set.
Downing Street did not comment on the matter when contacted.
President Trump and the First Lady, Melania, met the Queen at Windsor Castle when they came to the UK in July 2018 for a two-day working visit.
During the trip, the president also held talks with Mrs May at Chequers before heading to Scotland, where he owns the Turnberry golf course.
Last visit
The president’s last visit was marked by demonstrations around the UK.
In London, thousands of people took to the streets to voice their concerns.
And in Scotland, people showed their displeasure, both in Edinburgh and at Turnberry.
The National Police Chiefs’ Council estimated that the police operation for the president’s 2018 visit cost nearly £18m.
It said 10,000 officers from across the country were needed to cover the occasion.
The campaigners behind the 2018 protests, the Stop Trump coalition and Stand Up To Trump have vowed to mobilise “huge numbers” once again in response to the visit.
Commons Speaker John Bercow has previously said he would be “strongly opposed” to Mr Trump addressing the Houses of Parliament during a state visit.
A spokeswoman for the Speaker’s Office said a request to address Parliament would be “considered in the usual way,” but did not say whether a request had yet been received.
A state visit is a formal visit by a head of state and is normally at the invitation of the Queen, who acts on advice from the government.
National interest
State visits are grand occasions, but they are not just ceremonial affairs. They have political purpose and are used by the government of the day to further what it sees as Britain’s national interests.
Once the location and dates are confirmed, the government, the visiting government and the royal household will agree on a detailed schedule.
The Queen acts as the official host for the duration of the trip and visitors usually stay at either Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle.
There is usually a state banquet, and a visit to and speeches at the Houses of Parliament may be included. The Speaker of the House of Commons is one of three “key holders” to Westminster Hall, and as such, effectively holds a veto over who addresses Parliament.
The Queen usually receives one or two heads of state a year. She has hosted 109 state visits since becoming monarch in 1952.
The official website of the Queen and the Royal Family has a full list of all state visits since then, including details of how the ceremonies unfold.

"Drainage swallows our streams in Akwa Ibom state"
The Akwa Ibom multi-billion erosion project was aimed at tackling flooding. But our Correspondent, GODSWILL ODIONG , who moved from one village to another investigating, interviewing stakeholders and taking relevant photographs reports that it has turned around to kill almost all streams in Nsit Ibom Local Government Area.
Consequently, the suffering people experienced untold hardship while Anyang Nsit, the deity is angry and homeless.
Many people in Akwa Ibom state were delighted when the former governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio mooted the idea to construct the Dominic Utuk Ravine outfall flood channel and erosion control project for some reasons.
First, the project was targeted at ending flooding in Uyo, the state capital. Many parts of Uyo, especially Idoro, Itam and Ikot Ekpene roads used to be highly flooded whenever it rained.
Second, the technology – the pipe jacking or micro-tunnelling – adopted for the project was also thought to be very suitable, particularly as it was expected to channel water into well lubricated pipelines buried 40 metres under the ground, passing through the discharge drain at Ekim Itam-Ikot Oku road, Uyo.
But investigations in Afia Nsit, Nduo Eduo Nsit, Mbiokporo Nsit, Ikot Ofiok Nsit, Ukat Nsit, Ikot Oku Nsit, Ekpene Ikpan Nsit, Obo Urua Nsit, Ede Obom Nsit, Oboyo Ikot Ita, Mbiakot Nsit, Oboetuk Nsit, Obo Atai, Ayam Nsit and Okwo Nsit showed that barely 12 years after, the project has culminated in the contamination and drying up of many streams in Nsit Ibom Local Government Area.
It showed that the streams
which supported many activities, especially domestic, agricultural and
commercial, from very early times, started ‘dying’ soon after the coming
on stream of the project, apparently because they were interlinked or
interconnected.
A visit to the streams, or where they used to be, showed that in most cases, the streams were no longer in existence. In some cases, the sparkling streams have become mere stagnant waters and brownish in colour with the villagers who have no option, complaining of different ailments after drinking them.
Sad reality
The pathetic situation has attracted the comments of many indigenes. For instance, Eteidung Okon James Udoaka, Chairman Conference of Village Heads, Nsit Ibom Chapter, indicated that: ‘’we were born to see these streams over a long period of time. We used it from infant. Our forefathers used these streams, but this development has brought untold hardship to us. It is like our lives have been taken away.”
Eteidung Udoaka is not alone. Eteidung Ezekiel Ben Inyang, Village Head, Ekpene Ikpan Nsit, disclosed that: “Our streams used to be free flowing running water. A stream, as we were taught, is clean because it flows and washes dirt. Now it is stagnant, muddy and dirty.
“In other words, water should be colourless, odourless and tasteless, but that is not the case with our streams today. Our most treasured asset has been taken away.’’
Also, Elder Emah Bassey Essien, Chairman, Village Council, Ayam Nsit, stated that: “we continue to make use of the contaminated stream because we have no choice or option. Our people continue to go to streams, especially in the morning and evening even when the water is not clean. We drink mud water.
The young men have complained about eye pains and other ailments. It is by the mercy of God that we survive.”
A student, who gave his name as Ezekiel Monday Effiong, added that: ‘’very early in the morning, I will wake up and go to stream to wash my clothes, bath and fetch clean water for my parents. Now, if you are going to the stream, you cannot bath or do anything because it is dirty. But we still use the water because we don’t have another choice or option.’’
A few public boreholes in some communities have been over-grown by weeds, suggesting abandonment.

Sri Lanka Bombings: ISIS Claims Responsibility for Attacks
The Islamic State claimed responsibility on Tuesday for the Easter Sunday bombings at churches and hotels in Sri Lanka, as the government there raised the number of people killed to 321. The group’s Amaq news agency called the bombers “Islamic State fighters.”
• The government said the bombings might have been in retaliation for the killing of 50 people last month at mosques in New Zealand, and that two Islamist extremist groups might have been involved, not one.
• The F.B.I. has joined the investigation, officials said, as recriminations continued over the Sri Lanka government’s failure to act on warnings that terrorists were planning to attack churches. The country’s highest Roman Catholic prelate joined those chastising the government.
• The first funerals were held at a damaged church in western Sri Lanka, where as many as 100 people were killed. The coffins, many bearing the remains of children, were interred as the police raised the death toll to 321.

Alan GarcĂa: former Peru president dies after shooting himself before arrest.
GarcĂa, who faced accusations of taking bribes from Brazilian company Odebrecht during his presidency, shot himself at his home.
Peru’s former president Alan GarcĂa has died after deliberately shooting himself in the head when police tried to arrest him in connection with a multibillion-dollar Latin American corruption scandal.
“I am saddened by the death of former president Alan GarcĂa,” tweeted the country’s current president, MartĂn Vizcarra, confirming the news. “I send my condolences to his family and loved ones.”
Earlier, GarcĂa’s lawyer, Erasmo Reyna, told local media his client “took the decision to shoot himself” early on Wednesday after officers arrived at his home in the capital, Lima, to place him under preventive detention.
Peru’s interior minister, Carlos Morán, told journalists GarcĂa had told police officers he was going to call his lawyer and had “shut himself in his bedroom” before a shot was heard.
The 69-year-old politician – who faced accusations of taking bribes from the Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht during his 2006-2011 presidency – was admitted to a nearby hospital soon after, at about 6.45am, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.
Before his death was confirmed Peru’s health minister, Zulema Tomás, told reporters GarcĂa was in a “very serious” condition and had suffered three heart attacks from which he had been resuscitated. A 27-strong medical team, including neurosurgeons and intensive care specialists, was fighting to save the former president’s life.
“This is a day of national grief,” Alberto Quintanilla, a leftwing congressman, told local television after confirmation of GarcĂa’s death.
“Peru is in mourning. Our political system is mourning and we … express solidarity with the family … What has happened is very regrettable.”
GarcĂa is one of four former Peruvian presidents to be sucked into the vast Odebrecht scandal – by which multimillion-dollar bribes were paid to secure construction contracts across the region – alongside Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, Ollanta Humala and Alejandro Toledo.
Last week, a judge ordered that Kuczynski be placed under preventive custody for 10 days as part of a money-laundering investigation. Known as PPK, Kuczynski led Peru from 2016 until he resigned last March before a congressional move to impeach him over links to Odebrecht.
GarcĂa served two terms as president – from 1985 to 1990 and then 2006 and 2011 – and is one of Peru’s most prominent politicians. He rejected claims of wrongdoing, painting himself as the victim of political persecution. Last year he unsuccessfully requested political asylum in Uruguay after seeking shelter in its embassy in Lima.
“I have never sold myself and this has been demonstrated,” GarcĂa tweeted on Tuesday.
The attempt to arrest GarcĂa came just days after an investigation revealed his personal secretary, Luis Nava, had allegedly received $4m from Odebrecht’s off-the-books bribery department.
In an interview on Tuesday GarcĂa said he “emphatically” rejected the accusations against him which he described as “speculations” and “moral assassination”.
Political allies from GarcĂa’s once-powerful party, Apra, expressed shock and outrage at his dramatic death.
“At this moment of profound pain we must reaffirm our unity and our brotherhood,” tweeted congressman Jorge del Castillo, calling on supporters to gather outside the party’s headquarters on Wednesday night.
Another ally, Mauricio Mulder, described GarcĂa’s decision to take his own life as “an honorable act” taken in response to the “fascist persecution” of political foes.
“President GarcĂa has taken the decision of a free man,” to avoid humiliation by those intent on using him as a political “trophy”, Mulder said.
Ecuador’s former president Rafael Correa tweeted: “His suicide is, in reality, a murder … May his sacrifice help us understand that there must be limits to political struggle.”
GarcĂa went into politics in the 1970s – after a period studying in Paris, where he is said to have supported himself by busking outside metro stations – and has been a towering figure in the country.

World’s largest plane makes first flight
The world’s largest aircraft, a carbon-composite plane, took its first flight on Saturday from California, U.S., over the Mojave Desert in California.
The carbon-composite plane was by Stratolaunch Systems Corp, a company started by late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, as the company enters the lucrative private space market.
The white aeroplane, called Roc, nicknamed after a giant mythical bird, has a wingspan the length of an American football field and is powered by six engines on a twin-fuselage. It took to the air shortly before 7 a.m. Pacific time (1400 GMT).
It stayed aloft for more than two hours before landing safely back at the Mojave Air and Space Port as a crowd of hundreds of people cheered.
“What a fantastic first flight.
“Today’s flight furthers our mission to provide a flexible alternative to ground-launched systems.
“We are incredibly proud of the Stratolaunch team, today’s flight crew, our partners at Northrup Grumman’s Scaled Composites and the Mojave Air and Space Port, ” Jean Floyd, Stratolaunch’s CEO, said in a statement on the company’s website.
The plane is designed to drop rockets and other space vehicles weighing up to 500,000 pounds at an altitude of 35,000 feet.
It has been billed by the company as making satellite deployment as “easy as booking an airline flight.”
Saturday’s flight, which saw the plane reach a maximum speed of 189 miles per hour and altitudes of 17,000 feet, was meant to test its performance and handling qualities, according to Stratolaunch.
Mr Allen, who co-founded Microsoft with Bill Gates in 1975, announced in 2011 that he had formed the privately funded Stratolaunch.
Mr Allen died in October 2018 while suffering from non-Hodgkins’ lymphoma, just months after the plane’s development was unveiled.

RWANDA GENOCIDE: NEVER AGAIN!
![]() |
| RWANDA GENOCIDE |
Never again should humanity be so debased.
Never again should humanity be so desecrated.
Never again should humanity be so decimated.
Rwandans are mourning and will mourn for 100
days in kind memory of countrymen, women and
children who were killed twenty-five years ago,
precisely, in 1994.
Each time I read about it, I get scared of man. Over
800,000 people were killed. What a pogrom! According
to historical sources, most of those who died were minority
Tutsis and moderate Hutus, killed by Hutu extremists.
The remembrance flame is up and will so be for 100 days
in memory of the deceased. May their souls continue to rest
in peace. Amen.
To the widows, orphans and all those who are alive to bear the losses,
May they find comfort in this memorial in honour of their departed loved
ones.
Rwanda genocide, Never again!
Kolade Johnson's death: Is the police still your friend?
We kill those who should live and keep those who deserve to die. This aptly describes the character of the police. Where is the sanctity of human life? Life is sacred. Everyone has the right to life and should live.
The Holy Bible condemns the killing of man by man. The holy
Koran dissaudes the shedding of innocent blood. The traditional
rites of every custom and tradition in Africa forbids the killing of
humans for no justifiable reason. The catechism of the Holy Roman Catholic Church teaches that life is a gift from GOD and should be preserved. The constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria advocates the right of every citizen to life. The Force Order 237 on the use of firearms rebukes the abuse of firearms especially, on harmless citizens. On what premise or ground therefore, do the police & some members of the armed forces spill innocent blood? This has been on for too long. The last time I heard an order to perish lives without recourse to the law by the armed forces came from the Commander-in-chief of the Armed forces himself but that was if ballot box snatching was exercised.
Did Kolade Johnson snatch any ballot box? Methinks, the elections were over.
The unjustly, unlawful, unauthorised and unnecessary killings of innocent citizens by those whose job it is to preserve and protect lives have reached an alarming rate.
Where is the decency, decorum, dignity & discipline in the armed forces?
It is not enough for the Lagos state Police Command to identify the killers of Kolade Johnson. It is not enough to dismiss them from service. But they should be prosecuted according to the dictates of the law in this regard.
The President condolences to the bereaved family for me, signifies 'crocodile tears.' Why cry over split milk? All Nigerians need at this time is justice. Justice must be served and so seen to have been served. Again, words must be matched with actions.
The bad eggs in the police force should be separated from the good ones. Those who have been found guilty of extra-judicial killings should be made scape goats to serve as deterrents to others.
The rate of extra-judicial killings in our country by men of the armed forces particularly more by the police, has assumed not only an alarming but unprecedented rate. Are we a nation at war?
Look at Kolade! Rushed to the grave at only 36; still at the morning of life.
With the killing of the young man for no wrong, offensive or criminal course, can one still call the police a friend?
Enough of the cliche: "...will be brought to book" All we are saying: Let justice be done. Let Justice prevail.
For the Lawyers in the land, your silence is too loud.
